Amazon Prime Video Reveals New Films And TV Shows For September 2023
While the Hollywood writer and actor strike looks like it’s going to be leading to some notable Prime Video cancellations in the coming months, the streaming service’s roster of new US additions for September 2023 actually looks longer than usual – on both the Amazon Original and catalogue title fronts.
Looking at the new Originals first, the headline grabber for many will probably be Gen V: a spin off from The Boys that introduces us to Godolkin University: a prestigious superhero-only college where students train to be the next generation of superheroes. A process which, as you would expect from the universe of The Boys, isn’t always as straightforwardly heroic as it might be in other superhero worlds. You’ve got quite a wait for this one, though; it doesn’t arrive on Prime Video until September 29.
Dropping much sooner – September 1, in fact – is season 2 of fantasy series The Wheel Of Time, in which the group of heroes from the Two Rivers must find a way to take on new evils without the help of the woman who guided them in season one.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is available to rent or buy on Prime Video in September.
September 5, meanwhile, ushers in new Original One Shot: Overtime Elite, which follows the lives of some of the next generation of basketball stars as they try to make the move from college courts to the professional world.
Three days later Prime Video subscribers can get their teeth into Sitting In Bars With Cake: A new Amazon Original movie ‘inspired by true events’ that follows two close but very different best friends as they navigate life in Los Angeles in their 20s during a year of ‘cakebarring’ – a trend where people take home-baked cakes to bars to help meet new people.
September 12 marks the drop date of Kelce, a feature-length documentary chronicling the 2022-2023 season of Philadelphia Eagles captain Jason Kelce – a season that saw him, among other things, contemplating retirement, celebrating the arrival of a new daughter, and setting up a popular new podcast.
Two days on from the debut of Kelce sees the return of Thursday Night Football – Prime Video’s second season of exclusive coverage of Thursday night American football. This will focus on three big games in September, starting with defending champions Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Minnesota Vikings. (Followed on subsequent weeks by the San Francisco 49ers hosting the New York Giants, and the Green Bay Packers hosting the Detroit Lions. Coverage for all three games starts at 7pm EDT.)
Debuting on Prime Video on September 15 following a week in theaters is Amazon Original movie A Million Miles Away. This inspired-by-true-events tale charts the journey of Jose Hernandez from a rural village in to Mexico to becoming a NASA Flight engineer on the International Space Station.
New show Gen V is set in the world of The Boys.
Two other new Amazon Originals drop on Prime Video on September 15, too: Wilderness and Written In the Stars. Wilderness is a new series written and created by BAFTA Breakthrough winner Marnie Dickens, based on B. E. Jones’ novel about a dream romantic holiday turning into a life or death nightmare.
Written In The Stars is something a bit different for Prime Video: A 12-episode astrological dating show (!), where for some reason each episode someone born under one of the 12 zodiac signs is introduced to four dates born under other star signs.
Yet another new Amazon Original film, Cassandro, arrives on September 22 (following a week in select theaters). Directed by Academy Award Winner Roger Ross Williams, Cassandro tells the story of a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rises to international stardom after creating a character described as the ‘Liberace of Lucha Libre’.
The last Amazon Original debuting on Prime Video in September (on the 26th) is The Fake Sheikh, a three-part documentary about the rise and fall of maverick undercover British reporter Mazher Mahmood, who was known as the King of the Sting.
Subscribers to Amazon’s Freevee service have a couple of other new shows to look out for. God, Family, Football, which drops on September 1, follows the fortunes of the Evangel Christian Academy football team as they try to get back to their traditional all-conquering glory (following a disastrous no-win season) under the returning stewardship of their previous coach.
Neighbours: A New Chapter, meanwhile, brings us the return of the long-running (some might say endless) series about the lives of the residents of Ramsay Street, Australia.
Shifting from TV show highlights to the stand out films being added to Prime Video/Freevee’s service in September, the ‘tentpole’ addition is the surprisingly good new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem film, which will be available to rent or buy on the back of a successful theatrical run.
‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ arrives free within a Prime Video subscription on September 1.
There’s also plenty for fans of classic films to get excited about, though, on both Freevee and at no extra charge within a Prime Video subscription. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (dropping on September 1), for starters, delivers a years-ahead-of-its-time sci-fi classic that’s become such a cultural phenomenon that it even inspired the opening scene of the Barbie film that’s currently storming the global cinema box office.
There’s strong sci-fi support, too, from 2007’s Children of Men; Denzel Washington-starrer Deja Vu (yes, I class this as a sci-fi film!); surprise cult favourite, The Chronicles Of Riddick; and 1933’s version of The Invisible Man.
On the action front, Face/Off (September 1) brings us arguably the definitive english-language John Woo action film, aided and abetted by great turns by Nic Cage and John Travolta. This action all-timer is joined, also on September 1 in all cases, by: Two of Matt Damon’s Bourne Trilogy; Arnie classic Conan The Barbarian; Robert Rodriguez’s excellent 1995 action Western Desperado (which catapulted Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek to superstardom); John Milius’s 1980s classic Red Dawn; dated but still decent fun Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner favourite The Jewel Of The Nile; and fun 1998 swashbuckler The Mask Of Zorro.
If horror – both serious and fun – is your bag, highlights coming to Prime Video are Gore Verbinski’s effective US remake of The Ring; Sam Raimi’s Army Of Darkness; 2013’s Evil Dead; 1960’s The Brides Of Dracula starring, inevitably, Peter Cushing; 1931’s Dracula starring, equally inevitably, Bela Lugosi; under-rated creep-fest Sinister (2012); 1933’s The Mummy starring Boris Karloff as Imhotep; and 1941’s The Wolfman.
Classic John Woo auctioneer ‘Face/Off’ arrives on Prime Video on September 1.
Great comedy is a little thin on the ground with Prime Video’s September 2023 film additions, with the only titles jumping out being the film that made Hugh Grant a star, Four Weddings And A Funeral; Pedro Almodovar’s Oscar-winning All About My Mother; Mike Nichols’ The Birdcage, and charming romcom 10 Things I Hate About You (starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles).
Let’s finally pick out a few quality movie highlights that don’t fit neatly into a specific genre or category, starting with Alejandro G. Inarritu’s 21 Grams. Starring Sean Penn and a career-best Naomi Watts, this cleverly crafted and moving tale charts the devastating but also in some cases uplifting consequences of a fatal hit and run incident.
Then there’s: Michael Moore’s campaigning documentary Bowling For Columbine; excellent 1997 thriller Breakdown; expertly crafted sports scandal drama Eight Men Out; the devastating but brilliant Hotel Rwanda; Martin Scorsese’s charming Hugo; Schlocky and uneven but good looking serial killer drama Kalifornia; Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut, 1971’s psychological thriller Play Misty For Me; Rocky I and II; Francis Ford Coppola’s engrossing teen angst drama Rumble Fish (starring Dennis Hopper, Diane Lane, and a very young Matt Dillon); one of my all time top ten films, Ang Lee’s 1995/6 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense And Sensibility; Matthew Vaughn’s quirky but charming fantasy tale Stardust; intense thriller The Machinist, featuring an incredibly skinny Christian Bale; John Huston’s The Misfits, starring Marilyn Monroe in her most ‘serious’ role; brilliantly bonkers Norwegian film Troll Hunter (which does exactly what it says on the tin); Guy Ritchie’s unexpectedly excellent and powerful Afghanistan War movie The Covenant; and, provided you’re not afraid of a bit of arthouse, Peter Greenaway’s The Belly Of An Architect.
Norwegian film Troll Hunter is a riot, honestly.
Turning finally to Freevee’s new film offerings, the best stuff shapes up like this: the ever-disturbing 1984 adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984; fun twisty thriller Bad Times At The El Royale; Woody Allen’s sporadically hilarious Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask; Michael Cimino’s famously disastrous but actually very watchable Heaven’s Gate; Edgar Wright’s hilarious British cop comedy Hot Fuzz; Jurassic World; George Miller’s seminal Mad Max from 1979; Jonathan Demme’s dark 1986 comedy Something Wild; early Stanley Kubrick film, 1956’s The Killing; Robert Altman’s 1973 adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye; and Guillermo Del Toro’s beautiful (and Oscar winning) The Shape Of Water.
If all these recommendations aren’t already more than enough to help make your September fly by, here, in date of arrival order, is the full list of everything that’s coming to Prime Video and Freevee in the coming weeks.
